Ventilator Theory

The leaked pictures of the new Ventilator Theory caught me off guard, because this shoe is supposed to be the successor to the Travel Trainer VI, which is not even out yet.

You may think that this design is merely a modern reinterpretation of the original Ventilator (Reebok 90s classic), which is true at some degree, but the real story is that this shoe was originally designed with a focus on "pack-ability" that allows you to take a sneaker along while leaving the bulk behind - which is what Travel Trainer series was all about.

So what Ventilator-inspired shoe really is a shoe with a soul of the Travel Trainer; lightweight, flexible, low-profile; all these features makes this shoe trainable and packable.

このモデルの写真がネットに流れたのは少し驚いた。なぜならまだ公開されていないトラベルトレーナー６の後継者モデルだからだ。

このモデルはベンチレーターの現代バージョンと捉えられるのが普通だろう。でも正確にはpackable（荷造りのしやすさ）というコンセプトを念頭にデザインされたもので、それはまさしくトラベルトレーナーそのものだ。

ベンチレーターの顔立ちをしたこの靴は、トラベルトレーナーの魂を兼ね備えたものと捉えるのが自然だ。軽量性、屈折性、薄型構造、その全ての特徴がトレーニング可能でpackableなものにしている。

The Real Answer

A little late on this, but in case you haven't seen the A13s on the Man's feet.

Reebok got it right this time with the design but the colorways shown here is not the strongest in my opinion. It would have been nice to see more colors on the shoe especially on a simple/ aggressive design like this.

At the very least, Reebok did take a risk this time with an unapologetic design, where nowadays most brands are playing it safe with mash up models of their classic molds and oversaturating the market with as many variations as possible.
These products sell regardless of how good of an idea or bad one but the shoe game should not be only about numbers game.. so what I'm trying to mention here is that Reebok is not all about the money when it comes to AI model. It's about the player- AI doesn't care if people like his shoes or not, as long as he likes them.

少し前のニュースですが一応、アレンがアンサー13を履いてる写真です。

個人的にデザインは良しとして、このカラーに関して言うとデザインを引き立てていないなというのが感想。こういうシンプルでアグレッシブなデザインはもうちょっと色を使って欲しかった。

ここ数年、名作モデルに少し変更を加えたり、複数のモデルを合体させたり、ありとあらゆるバリエーションをリリース。。と言うようなブランドが多い中、少なくともリーボックは今回、流行云々は無視して堂々と新しいデザインでリスクをとってきたことは確かだ。クラシックモデルをいじったモデルはアイデアが良くても悪くてもリスクは少なく、売れる事は確か。スニーカーの世界は数字だけの世界にはなって欲しくない。つまり、ここで僕が言いたいのはここで履いているAIモデルはお金のためだけじゃなく、あくまでもAIのために作られたということ。本人が気に入っていれば他のだれがケチを付けようと気にしてない。

Answer 13 - The Radiant Energy

The Answer XIII (13) is a pure performance piece of footwear based on "Radiance", Reebok's 2010 design theme. Radiant lines flow through the upper and creating zones of functionality; flexibility in the forefoot, breathability in the midfoot, and support in the heel. To achieve lightweight construction, without compensating on stability, the designer have been investigating the layers and pieces that could be replaced or removed. Visual simplicity is the result of the function. The designer wants "no frills" and "staying true" to the philosophy of achieving maximum performance with minimum effort required by an athlete.

This model has all the necessary performance features without overtly screaming where all the technical functions are (more so in the upper than the bottom). It is built close to the last, with the molded malleolus (ankle) to create sleek radiant feel. Hexride adds forefoot cushioning for explosive guards who is always on their toes like Allen. Midfoot arch is sculpted to follow the foot shape - Hexride pillars grow out from the sculpted midfoot arch to maintain the support while eliminating unnecessary weight.

Forefoot midsole on a typical basketball shoe is usually thinner than rearfoot, where as this shoe is completely opposite; forefoot midsole is higher than rearfoot. "We were able to achieve this type of look by attaching the upper over the midsole rather than the reverse. Thick PU sockliner compensates the loss of the rearfoot midsole, so the function is still there." says Kohei Kanata, the mastermind behind the A13.

"Creating a comfortable shoe is a given; what excites me the most is how much Allen loves the shoe. When we were in Detroit in January to show him the All-Star Answer XII (12), he was super excited to see the latest A13 sample. He loves the comfort and the look. He was holding the shoe the entire meeting and said he 'can't wait for the next season to wear this shoe'".
"When we design shoes for Allen, we want to push the creative boundaries and take chances on design. Just as much as people love/ hate on Allen, this shoe is going to be the same. It is what best fits him, both functionally and aesthetically. He is who he is, and this is what it is. This shoe is Allen Iverson".



アンサー13はリーボックの2010年のデザインテーマの１つであるRadiant (放射、光）を基に製作された正真正銘のパフォーマンスフットウェアだ。アッパーの放射状のラインはつま先が屈折性、中足部は通気性、後足部はサポート性を表す。安定性を保ちながら軽量な靴をデザインする為に、デザイナーは一つ一つのパーツを徹底的に吟味し、無駄なパーツを変更、または取り除いた。結果としてシンプルな顔立ちになったのは機能の現れでもある。無駄な装飾を省き、「できるだけ少ないエネルギーで効率良く最大限のパフォーマンスを引き出す」という考え方に従いたいとデザイナーは言う。「デザインも同じで、あまり“がんばり”が見えてしまうと逆にかっこ悪くなってしまう。」らしい。

このモデルは必要な性能を兼ね備えていながら、はっきりとどこにテクがあるのかけばけばしく目立たせる事はしていない。逆に滑らかな雰囲気を創る為にラストに限りなく近づけ、くるぶしを象った。アレンのような爆発的なガードに多くみられる”つま先立ち”プレイヤーの為に前足部にヘックスライドを配置しクッション性を確保。足の内側中足部のくりぬきは土踏まずを象っている。そしてその象りからヘックスライドの柱が地面まで延び、重さを取り除きながら安定感を維持した。

従来のバッシュのミッドソールは前足部が後足部よりも低いが、A13は逆で前足部の方が高い。「アッパーをミッドソールの上に縫い付ける事でこのユニークな外観を作る事ができた。薄くなった後足部のミッドソールはPU（ポリウレタン製）の中敷きで埋め合わせているので、機能は損なってません。」とアンサー13を手掛けたデザイナー金田康平氏は言う（余談だが日本人の彼は過去にアンサー10と12を手掛けた）。

「履き心地は大前提。一番エキサイティングなのはアレンがこのバッシュを相当気に入っているという事。１月にデトロイトでA12オールスターカラーを見せた時、彼はA13の最新サンプルを心待ちにしていた。履き心地、見た目、両方とも気に入っていて、ミーティング中手元から離さずこう言った。『来シーズンこの靴を履くのが今から楽しみだよ。』」「アレンのバッシュをデザインするとき、想像力を押し上げ、リスクを恐れる事無く、デザインで引っぱりたい。アレンの事を好きな人、嫌いな人がいるのと同じでこの靴も同じ様に好き嫌いが分かれると思う。機能、見た目共に彼にフィットしていて、このバッシュは彼そのものです。」

Union Speed II

If you live in Japan, you've probably seen this shoe already on court and at retail stores. I figured I'd post them up since it was not released outside of Japan. This model is a step brother to Make It Rain - a lighter version for quick guards for those who play Bukatsu ball. It shares the same outsole/ midsole design as its predecessor, with an improved rubber compound that is little more grippier.

日本に住んでいる人はもう既にコートやお店で見かけたかもしれない。日本国外では発売されなかったので紹介します。このモデルはMake It Rainの弟分として部活でプレーするスピードタイプのガード選手の為に誕生。前モデルと同じミッドソールとアウトソールを使用し、ラバーコンパウンドをすこし変えてグリップが向上。



What's unique about this shoe is the construction. Free floating webbing, or what I call 'fingers' create support for the midfoot, while the monomesh underneath give plenty ventilation to let the heat out. I guess "hot" kicks don't always have to literally be that way.

この靴のユニークな点は構造です。すこし浮かした状態のサイドのウェビングが中足部をサポートし、その下のモノメッシュが靴の中の蒸れを解消。"Hot"なキックスは必ずしも"熱く"なくても良い訳です。

Make It Rain

The second installment of the Bukatsu series from Reebok was engineered based on 3 key technical elements that was inherited from the original Bukatsu Union-Versatility shoe; maximum breath-ability, grippy outsole, and light-weight construction.

Noticeable improvements from the original is the quarter panel ventilation details; dome-shaped molded mono mesh laminated with molded synthetic leather retains the shape of the shoe without building on unnecessary layers of material. This construction helps maintain the strength on the quarter without sacrificing the weight and breath-ability.

リーボックブカツシリーズの第二弾は前作のユニオンバーサティリティの３つの機能である、通気性、グリップ性、軽量性を継承し、設計されている。

前作から進化した点にサイドの通気孔ディーテールが上げられる。
ドーム型にモールドされたメッシュは型押しされた合成皮革にラミネート加工。この構造によって、余計な素材を加えずに靴の形をきれいに保つ事が可能になり、軽量性、通気性を犠牲にする事なく必要な強度は保たれる。



Also worth mentioning is the forefoot dual density midsole for lateral stability, full-foot internal mesh bootie, and low profile dmx foam for responsive cushioning.

The sample shown above was created using a last designed by taking an average of a large number of Asian basketball players’ feet. Nevertheless the upper pattern compliments this Asian last to obtain a specific proportion, the product that you will see in retail will have a slight modification to the last for wider range of audience-- visual sacrifice made, all for the sake of making the best performance shoe.

さらに特筆すべきディテールは、安定性を保つ為に前足部に配置されたdual density foam、靴下のようなインナーのinternal bootie、そしてクッショニングには薄めのDMX foam。

上のサンプルは、アジア圏のバスケ選手の足を基にデザインされた特殊なラストを使い、作成された。アッパーのパターンとラストの形が絶妙にマッチし奇麗なプロポーションを造っているが、販売されるバージョンはアジア人以外のプレーヤーにもフィットする様に修正が施されているーーそれは全て機能性の為に。
